Dan Shaw Many landscape architecture students take their plants classes from biology and horticulture departments. However, students taking Dan Shaw's class about Minnesota flora are fortunate to have a landscape architect's perspective about the topic. Shaw, a restoration ecologist and designer with Peterson Environmental Consulting [PEC], also founded and runs Another Sun Nursery with his wife. Their nursery specializes in native plants, including prairie, wetland, and forest species. At PEC, Shaw designs restorations for woodlands, prairies, and wetlands, and works to encourage human interaction with the landscape. He also consults to city governments about their environmental ordinances and environmental design projects. In addition, Shaw does residential landscape design in his own practice. "I'm interested in how native vegetation can be used in formal and controlled manners to add beauty as well as ecological function," he says. While pursuing his MLA at the University, Shaw worked for the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources [BWSR] and conducted the first inspection of wetlands in the Minnesota Wetland Bank. The Wetland Bank was created in 1994 to encourage wetland restoration by allowing landowners who restore or create wetlands to sell credits to those planning on draining or filling wetlands. Shaw developed a questionnaire with Professor Susan Galatowitsch to survey the opinions of landowners about their restoration projects and inspected the wetlands' vegetative and hydrologic characteristics. Also while in school, Shaw wrote Native Vegetation in Restored and Created Wetlands, Its Establishment and Management in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, a comprehensive guide on the planting of restored and created wetlands published by BWSR. He is also in the process of writing a guide to plants that can be used in stormwater systems. | |||
