The faculty of the Department of Landscape Architecture maintains an outstanding research program that is supported by a research staff of professional landscape architects, architects and graduate student assistants. This research is routinely brought into the program's studios and classrooms to introduce and engage graduate students in the cutting-edge ideas and research being developed at the University of Minnesota.

This year, the landscape architecture faculty garnered over $1.2 million in funded research projects. The role of water quality, ecological systems, transportation, sustainable development, historical precedents, politics and art as an expression of human values are strong, integrated themes in this research. In doing this work, the faculty emphasizes the use of design as a tool of inquiry, working in the realms of urban, suburban, exurban, and regional design.
